Ambleside is located in the heart of the Lake District just north of Lake Windermere. It is a popular destination for the general tourist, as well as walkers and climbers and people engaging in a range of other outdoor activities. Whilst Ambleside is slightly smaller than Bowness a couple of miles away, it has many shops, restaurants, and places to stay. Many shops in the town are focused on outdoor equipment for walkers and climbers whilst many other shops sell gifts, books, and maps.

Ambleside is great for families, day visitors and people planning outdoor activities. It is often used as a base for walkers and climbers due to is close proximity to the fells of Fairfield and Langdale. There are also more gentle walks to Wansfell, Loughrigg and Stockghyll Waterfall. For water sports enthusiasts there are a range of activities which include Sailing, canoeing, and boating. Low Wood water sports centre has also hosted the mile long Great North Swim across Windermere. The last event was held on the 12 & 13th September 2009.

For families, there are lake cruises on Windermere, a cinema, gift shops, gentle walks, scenic views, and a range of accommodation. There are also art galleries selling mostly exclusive art, cafe's , restaurants, and information centre's. Ambleside is an ideal location for any Lake District Holiday.
